Hong Kong Phooey (Hanna-Barbera) - 2008
Artwork by James Beaver

Hanna-Barbera's cartoon Hong Kong Phooey combines two of the greatest things on Earth: martial arts, cartoons and Scatman Crothers' voice. It's still one of my favorite cartoons, especially because of the voice cast which also included Joe E. Ross ("Ooh! Ooh!") and Kathi Gori. I've been working on regaining my ability to draw cartoony characters and decided to wait until good enough at it before drawing good ol' HKP. I'm not quite there yet, but I think he came out okay. With the shaded version, I tried making his body look more like a muppet than a shaggy dog. I'm not sure if other people will like it, but I dig how it turned out.

While most artists and writers have "that earth-shattering Batman" or "that epic Spider-Man" re-invention, I have one for Hong Kong Phooey that'd flip his entire situation around while keeping him and nearly everyone else exactly the same but hopefully make it even funnier. In the microscopic chance that I have some opportunity to use it, I'm going to try mastering the art of drawing Hong Kong Phooey characters. If you needed another reminder that this place isn't called illmosis for nothing, that would be it.
