I’m trying to get some things set up for the Illmosis Scrapbook, a black-and-white sketchbook that I’ve been threatening to do for a few years now. Here’s an early version of the logo.

Illmosis Scrapbook logo test 1

The colors in SCRAPBOOK still need work but everything fits together just the way I wanted it to. I don’t know if I’ll be able to get this finished in time for the All AmeriCon convention in May but I at least want this done by the summer. I still need to mess with the colors on the “Scrapbook” part. I’ll be posting more previews of this as I get things together.

Powerkore uniform designs

Nothing much here this week. I spent most of last few days working on a big update of ScrollBoss sprite gallery structure along with being a bit worn out. One thing that I’m able to throw on the site is a few of the color scheme ideas I have for that new PowerKore design I posted a while ago. I’m keeping this short so I can get to work on the weird things you’ll see here this April.

Tyris Flare in a fighting stance

Tyris is in base color mode along with having a bit of her linework cleaned up. I still don’t know when the full color version will be finished. Sorry for the late posting but I’m putting the finishing touches on the new ScrollBoss sprite gallery. I want to get that out of the way A.S.A.P. so I can start working on all the crazy stuff you’ll see here next month.

Tyris Flare in a fighting stance

This one may be later than normal but there’s still an update this week. The main thing to see here is a new picture of Tyris from Sega’s classic side-scroller, Golden Axe. The earlier attempts to drawing her again like this one and this other one didn’t lead to much but that last one was the “almost there” pic that let me know I just needed to wait a while before trying again. Tyris won’t get to be in color until I get some comic book business out of the way but I plan to have her finished up before the ScrollBoss 10th Anniversary shindig.

The other thing I was working on this week was that Bred sprite set that you’ve seen bits and pieces of over the last few weeks. I made a video of the sprite test I ran with the OpenBoR beat-em-up gaming engine and you can see the results below. Please forgive the crappy quality of the video and misaligned punch animation. That punch has already been fixed.

No, I’m not making a Final Fight mod for OpenBoR even if it looks like I am. Speaking of Final Fight lets me make a smoove segueway into showing you another video. This is a video review by Rinry and Jot of Final Fight’s SNES port. Instead of the usual “OMG U GUYS THIS GAME IS DOOKIES LOL” stupidity you’ll find in most YouTube game reviews, the review takes a non-nostalgic look at the game for those who want to pick it up on the Wii Virtual Console but didn’t grow up playing it. You’ll also hear Rinry talk about one of my favorite characters while a familiar piece of artwork pops up on the screen:

Thanks to Rinry for using the art and giving me a shoutout in the credits. Most of all, I’m glad to see that character get some attention somewhere. Be sure to check out her other videos like the excellent NES vs SMS comparison of Double Dragon.

New sprites of Bred and Dug from Capcom's Final Fight.

Sadly, this is one of those low-content updates I was talking about. I decided to scrap the idea I had for that group-shot I was stuck on in the “Universe Intro” story and started drawing a different layout. I also made a nice amount of progress on the Final Fight thug sprite set and today’s update is made from that. A new animation of Bred can be found in the Alternate Versions section of that gallery page linked to in the thumbnail over there. Those of you who have never played Final Fight should watch this video of the game’s car-bashing Bonus Round before seeing the animation.

New sprites of Bred and Dug from Capcom's Final Fight.
Douglas Bild from Rushing Beat Ran in his select screen pose.

Last week’s announcement that weekly updates weren’t guaranteed anymore didn’t mean that I wasn’t going to try. In fact, ScrollBoss will get an update later on tonight in an unannounced content crossover weekend. It’s really a coincidence that all of today’s content is beat-em-up video game related. Douglas Bild (Rival Turf, Brawl Brothers) is finally in full color and looking mean. I also have something that I posted a teaser of a few weeks back with new sprites of Bred and Dug from Final Fight as they may have looked in a Street Fighter Alpha game. The posted sprites are part of an upcoming full sprite set for ScrollBoss. I also went back to the old Guy: Bushin Senpu Kyaku pic and fixed the character tags for Dug and Axl.

Trick's 2009 character profile art

Trick finally joins Treat in having full-color artwork. I also updated the character profiles for Trick, Treat, Negator and Hostyle. The first three were updated to have the full color artwork, while Trick, Treat and Hostyle have sketches from the year 2000 added to their profile. I also fixed the right fist of theDouglas Bild pic but I’m not sure when I’ll get to fully color it.

Bad news/Good news time: The Bad News is that this will be the last Illmosis update where I’ll definitely be updating every week. I’m not saying that I’ll only update once every two weeks but I can’t guarantee that it will always updates will hit every Sunday. The Good News is that I’m doing it to give myself more time to work on comics. Instead of having to do something just to have new material for the site, that time will go into things like that Universal Intro, Nutroll: the Illness and a minibook that will have slightly different versions of those stories and more. I’m also redesigning chunks of ScrollBoss including a hefty reworking of the graphics galleries there. Even if I don’t have a new thing ready for every update, there will be a main post on the site with previews, teasers or sketches. I’ll be back to a definite weekly schedule after I get some of these bigger projects out of the way but I really need a few months of freestyle mode to get this stuff done. There is also another comic I need to start that I can’t tell you the name of because it’d spoil something. All I’ll tell you is that I’ve been planning it for a long time and some teasers I’ve posted that seem to make no sense at all are connected to it. 2010 is going to be wild and I hope you keep coming back to see what happens.

Passion Tanaka likes candy with a message.Powerkore uniform designs

Aw, yeah! Two pics this week, people! First up is a hastily drawn and colored pic of Passion Tanaka being deceptively goofy and kinda creepy. But that’s how she gets down so it’s okay! Valentine’s Day is a stupid holiday made to guilt people into buying expensive things for each other but I had to draw the idea once it popped into my head. The second pic is just the new design of the PowerKore characters that I mentioned last week. They’ll be appearing in that “Universal Intro” story on either page 3 or page 4 (depending on which story pattern I use). There are variations to the outfit but this is the main style.

Douglas Bild from Rushing Beat Ran in his select screen pose.

After days of being sick and finally having to take some kind of medicine that induces sleepy time, I’m just going to throw the update on right now. You probably can’t tell if you’re reading this from the site’s main menu but I just replaced the older news module with Folger’s Crystals WordPress. The Illmosis web log will have the site updates along with posts about other things related to the sites or to my characters like Nutroll, Twofold, Passion Tanaka, the Ice Cream Man and the rest. I also ink-traced and base-colored that Douglas Bild picture from last week. I was hoping to have more art done for the update but turning into a human snot faucet, redesigning the outfits of the bad guys in this old Ice Cream Man pic (maybe I’ll put the sketches on the blog), redesigning the ScrollBoss font a bit, working on a sprite set and some other ScrollBoss stuff wore me out a bit.

Yes, I’m replacing the CuteNews update post format with WordPress goodness just like I did on ScrollBoss. Many posts will be site updates but there will also be previews, rambles, character explanations and more things that won’t show up on the site’s main menu. Expect more Illmosis bits to be integrated as I work on the theme. Comments, feedback, and barely on-topic rambles are welcomed as long as they aren’t SPAM.

Any posts before this one are archived posts from the older news system. Thank you and watch the closing doors.
